Comparison of four ballistic and thrusting target materials: An experimental and Bayesian approach using static testing of stone and steel arrow tips

Researchers use a variety of target materials, and sometimes combinations in their archaeological experiments to examine thrust-spear or projectile penetration, impact angle, durability, other issues involving prehistoric hunting weaponry. This materials is beneficial science several ways, but it may also hinder the comparison results because many these do not necessarily share similar physical properties. Here, we assess penetration properties four different materials—store-bought meat, clay, two types gelatin—via static tests modern broadhead-tipped arrow stone-tipped attached an Instron Universal Materials Tester. Our analyses load-deflection curves, peak load, work energy demonstrate how are some ways others, which suggests that researchers strategically employ one depending on question asked hypothesis tested.
